I'm considering putting a water pressure guage on my 150. What would be considered normal water pressure? I see some guages go to 30 psi and others to 60 psi. Just wondering which one I need.

You need the 30 psi guage...

You should see around 10 psi at idle... 5 psi at idle when the tstats are opened... And up to 25 psi at WOT...

I think you have the highest readings I have ever seen. Mine, (87 150), is only abour 5-6 at Idle, and around 10-12 WOT. Thats with a new impeller. Always been that way, never overheats and runs great.

I believe the 5psi at idle Lube that is very consistent with what you should see when the t-stats are opened. But when you first start up the engine it should be around 10 psi until it warms up to open them.

10-12 at WOT is not correct however. I have a new guage I'm sure is pretty accurate. I was out today and reached 20-22psi at WOT. Trimmed out some by the way...And at that point the poppet was open...
I can see when my poppet valve opens around 2500-3000 psi.. It will go up to 15-20psi and then jump down to about 10psi when it opens and with more throttle will continue back up to 20...You have to throttle up slowly to see it however.
(25psi might be a stretch, but I said up to!!! ;) )

If it's not overheating, I wouldn't sweat it... Do you have the original lower unit on the motor?

I don't know if you remember my post last fall when I lost almost all water pressure on the lake... I found that the gasket under the pump cover blew out just in one small spot (there was a photo that showed it) and that alone caused me to go from the 20-23 psi at WOT to about 10-12psi...
I caught it in time thankfully when I noticed my temp guage was reaching 240F...

At idle the pressures read about 1psi, and only about 2psi at no-wake speeds... Scary situation.

hey lube man, yours is a merc and this one in question is a evinrude.

different beast.

mercs have always had lower psi readings and omcs usually were higher, with the exception of the 90's loopers.

just a thought
