Water Pressure Relief Valve and Cooling Concerns

Hi all,

It seems to me that many many Chrysler/Force owners are having similar situations with their cooling system. That is, good water flow at idle and low speeds but poor/none at higher RPM's. I've also noticed differences in peoples opinions about this. Some are saying that you should have good spray at all speeds and others seem to think that most of the water exits out the exhaust in the water, therefore visible flow is a non-issue (at higher RPM's).

Well....which is it??

I have the same problem with my 1972 85HP Chrysler. The water pump and housing are new and it has never shot water above 1/2 throttle. Of course, I mainly fish alone and I have to go into quite a turn to try and look  My over heat buzzer has not gone off.

My motor HAS overheated before however, with a previous owner (I've had the motor for only 6 months). The head is very dark. When I first got the motor I pulled the lower unit and there were 3 tangs missing on the impeller. They were all laying right there (thankfully). The exhaust side looks new with no discoloration.

After some posts and reading my manual, I pulled the water pressure relief valve to take a look. It came out easily and looked in great shape. There were a few small peebles on the end of valve that came out with it. I took a hose and shot water into it. A good flow came out of the exhaust hole (above prop).

I know this is more of a ramble than anything but do I (and all these other Chrysler/Force owners) have a blockage or what??

Thanks

Shane

Re: Water Pressure Relief Valve and Cooling Concerns

All I can say(not being an EXPERT) is that I bought my 55 Chrysler brand new in 1970. Took it out to Owasco lake(a finger lake) and broke it in according to the manual. It is equipped with an overheat light. When it was time to bring up to cruising speed for a moment, I went back and checked the water flow. It was a flow, not a pressurized stream. The overheat light never came on. The engine ran fine except for being a gas hog. I was running 24-1 gas-oil as per break in directions.BTW , how difficult was checking the relief valve. It sounds like a worthwhile winter project.

For those that wish to replace or check their relief valves...be really careful as the little bolts snap very easily.

Also..sand and small gravel is an issue with Force/Chrysler engines. It sometimes will plug up the exhaust water jacket.

TMD

Re: Water Pressure Relief Valve and Cooling Concerns

The Seloc manual really warns about the relief valve. I decided to be gentle and if it wasn't going to budge, I wouldn't mess with it. I sprayed the 2 bolts with PB Blaster, waited about 10 minutes, then sprayed it again. I waited a few minutes then gave it a shot. It offered very little resistance.

Another question I wanted to ask was this: Is there a right or wrong way to put in the impeller?? Can it be put in upside down? If so, how do you tell?

Shane

Where is the relief valve,,is it the little square box above the spark plugs in the back.

No, that is the thermstat housing. The relief valve is on the bottom left of the Exhaust plate. It is separate from the exhaust plate and is kind've oval shaped. It is probably a 1 1/2" wide or something like that. Two small bolts hold it on.

Shane

Turtle.

On some models of 35hp-55hp it was possible to put the impeller in upside down. If this was done the driveshaft would ride up and wreck the impeller and housing.

Also..the driveshaft must be turned CLOCKWISE when install the new impeller.

TMD
