Hey guys (and few gals, thanks for being with us today!) I have an older model 9.9/15 hp Johnson (1974) The water outlet is in back of the motor, under the cowling. Anyway, I'm new to johnsons altogether. Heres the question of the day. When I run this motor in a barrel, water sprays out fairly good after about 3 minutes (i guess there is a thermostat?). Last night I attached some earmuffs for the first time and ran the motor. The foot never got hot to touch, but water seemed to barely dribble (if at all) thru the water outlet. Is this because all the exhuast pressure was coming thru the prop? whats the deal?

Waco:

Sound to me like you need to replace the water pump impeller. They do not have a thermostat of any kind. It also sould not take that long for the water to start comming out the tattletail hole.

Craig

I have a manual on the way, will it tell me if this model has a thermostat? I called a dealer, and from the top of his head, he couldnt recall if they did or not. Also, there is not an additional water outlet on this model is there? 1974 johnson 10R74S.

Hi Waco,
Is the power head getting hot? I've seen a lot of Johnsons/ Evenrudes that have very little spray comming out of those exaust reliefs that never got hot and ran very good. If you can hold your hand on the head for a short period of time without much discomfort I would say it's OK.
Maybe this will help
