1996 Larson, Volvo 3.0 GS 4 cyl 135 HP.

It appears that my belt is loose enough that the at low speeds the water pump does not spin and causes overheating. Once I rev up and increase the speed the belt tightens up and spins the water pump without a problem.

The belt is loose no doubt. I don't think it's the watter pump, because I can spin it freely with my hand every time this happenes.

Where can I find a belt? A dealer here asks $7 for the belt and $10 shipping. I am bit upset because he is supposed to be a volvo dealer then yet he charges me shipping charge. I guess, regular car volvo dealership wouldn't work in this case since the car engines do not have water pump right?

Re: Water pump belt

if you remove the belt you should be able to find one close enough at any good auto parts store remeber you may want one a littel bit shorter because yours is to long now

tommays

Re: Water pump belt

I've had good luck taking a belt to my local auto parts store and matching it up with one they have in stock. Usually they can find something the exact size.

The other thing you need to do is try and tighten up the belt you have, if you can't then it's probably got a belt that is too big and you need to go down a size.

Well, I went to the autozone parts dealer, but the closest one they found was bit too short. Cost $2.99, but worth a try.

Should have tried going to some bigger auto parts store.

How do you tighten up a belt?

I tried pushing the water pump further I can, but the belt is still to large.

Re: Water pump belt

Alek, My local auto parts store uses the numbers on the belt to cross match to an auto belt. The price is 1/2 of Merc's price.

I am not familar with your exact motor, but usually you move the alternator and power steering pump to tighten the water pump belts.
