water pump change frequency

Hi,

I just serviced my in-laws' outboard, a 2000 Yamaha 25 hp 4-stroke. I changed the oil in the crankcase and lower unit, including filter and seals, and ran fogging oil thru it as well. From the looks of the oil, I doubt any maintenance had ever been done by the marina where they store it. The owner of the marina says he "can't get the parts" for it, which I think is nuts. Anyway, I doubt the water pump has ever been changed. Changing it is beyond my abilities, so I asked him if he would change it if I picked up the parts. He replied saying, "As long as it's peeing a good stream of water, I wouldn't bother changing it." The motor is 7 years old and that seems long enough for a water pump to me. Should I find another marina or take his advice and let it go?
Thanks.

Yea a good investment changing it once a year. If it costs you 20-30 bucks to keep it cool thats way better than paying 1500 for a overhaul. In my opinion. Even if its every other year. When you do the maintnence on a outboard it gives you the chance to see what else may be going wrong. If you go on the "it aint broke so dont fix it" than you are setting yourself up to pay a lot of money in repairs. If you find that whyle your servicing it that you need a 2 dollar gasket elsewhere than thats your chance to change it and know that you are in good shape!

Usually changed yearly or every 100 hours of run time, whichever comes first.

I think Yamaha is 2 year interval. It's not that hard to do, get the parts and do it yourself or at least take off the lower unit and bring that to the repair shop.

Go to the yamaha-motor website and find a Yamaha dealer with a 5 star or master mechanic. Yamaha parts are very easy to get. Am I correct in thinking that your present marina is not a Yamaha dealer? If the present dealer tells you that he can't get the parts I would not let him change the water pump because he probably doesn't have the service manuals either.
