i just changed the water pump on my 99 200 johnson. while looking at the parts listing i noticed there are 2 different kits, one for a vented type lower units and i guess 1 for a standard? the only noticeable difference i could determine was the length of the mounting bolts were shorter that holds the housing on and some missing grommets. now i am worried i may have installed the wrong kit since i was missing the grommet that holds the copper tube in place on top of the water pump. i figured the difference in bolts was an improvement since the pics seem to indicate the same in both kits. fortunately i have not put the lower unit back on. i was going to see if i could pick up the grommet tomorrow but after thinking about thought i might better see if anyone here knew anything about it. thanks

I think there is where you have made an incorrect assumption.
The difference in kits, (I think) is one is for a 20" lower, and the other is for a 25" lower. It has an extension to accomodate the extra 5 " length of L/U.

Never heard of a "vented lower unit". I could be wrong....probably am.....

it appears you may be correct. the terminology used on the sheet with the pump is "relieved exhaust housing" not vented. sorry, was trying to do from memory. that kit is the one shown for the longer shaft motors, which mine is. what concerns me is when i look at the parts detail for like the pump housing it shows a different part number for the housing in each kit.

it is appearing like i have been given the wrong kit and now have it installed. i can reuse the extension with no problem but i do need the grommet that fits on top of it (if everything else is the same). my old one is falling apart. so far no dealers around here have the grommet and it will take 2 weeks to get.

thanks

Just a suggestion; have you tried NAPA or O'Rielly auto parts, both in my area have a marine catalog and only take 1 or 2 days to deliver.

Re: water pump differences 200 johnson

just went by a former omc mechanic's that live nearby to see if he had one around. he indicated that is wasn't a real important part and the one i had would be fine to use. he did say however there is a difference in the housings and suggested i reuse the old housing with the new cup and impeller. that lines up with the paper work in the pump too since it indicates the kits have different numbers for the housing. so hopefully all is good. thanks

If the top of the w/p hsg has no hole in it you have the correct one. If it has a hole you've the wrong one.

Its like boobie said, the difference is in the w/p housing. Correct model number of engine will get you the correct waterpump kit.

What it amounts to is, the no holer is used on the split line g/c and the one with the hole is used on the straight line g/c.

got it all back together and working good. just for the sake of curiosity though, what is the deal with the hole?
