water pump gasket?

I am replacing the water pump on my 1979 6hp Evinrude. My Seloc manual does not show a gasket on the water pump base plate, but the kit comes with one and the one that I am replacing has one. Obviously, the gasket goes on. My question is does this gasket get some kind of sealer or go on dry? Also, is it necesary to seal the upper surface of the lower unit? The mechanic at the dealership where I got the water pump kit says all they do is bolt the lower unit back on. I do not see any residue there from an old sealant. Should I lubricate the driveshaft before putting it back together; with what? What kind of lightweight oil do you use on the inside of the water pump; will WD-40 work?
Thanks ,

Re: water pump gasket?

no sealer is used between the lower unit and the exhaust housing that it bolts to. there should also be no reason to put sealer on the water pump gasket ,but if you do be sure and use something that will not get pushed out when you assemble it and block any water passages .to lube the housing wd-40 will not work very well use something like motor oil or either grease just remember you do not want to cake it on just a light film to slick it up for the new impeller.i would put some heavy grease like the omc/bomb brand triple guard grease or some anti seize on the top of the drive shaft ..

Hello work4bait
Do not greese the top end of the drive shaft. this could cause a pre-load condition on the crank shaft. I believe Capt Black ment tell you to greese just the splines of the drive shaft. You will also want to use anti-seize on all screws and bolts when you reassemble. It's helpful to wipe a little greese in your water tube gromet.

YES I MEANT TO JUST PUT IT ON THE SPLINES. YOUR MANUAL MAY NOT SHOW THE GASKET BECAUSE THE MANUAL IS JUNK ! NOTHING MORE THAN A GOOD FIRE STARTER . IF YOU REALLY WANT A MANUAL THAT WILL HELP YOU AND DO SO ACCURATELY BUY YOUR SELF A FACTORY MANUAL IT WILL BE MONEY WELL SPENT.
