Water pump gasket

I have purchased a used LU for my '76 85hp Johnson. The person I bought it from says it has a new impeller, but I want to check it before installing the LU. Easy enough to pull the housing. If it doesn't meet my spec, I have an impeller in the old LU that has about 1 hour on it. My question is, can you buy just the gasket that I will disturb when I pull the housing? At least I seem to remember a gasket there.....

Re: Water pump gasket

Jason.... There is no gasket between the top surface of the lower unit and the upper housing it attaches to. Simply apply a bead of Marprox Sealer 1000 or Boat Armor Sealer 1000 to the top surface of the lower unit surface before installing it. Wait about 10 minutes after applying it so that it can form a sticky but not runny substance. That will form a very good seal.

JasonB,If I read you right you are speaking of the waterpump housing. Not sure on your specific model ,but I believe the plastic housing just has an "o"ring that fits into a contoured groove for a seal.As long as it isn't split or deformed flat too much ,it will reseal.Better yet,if your other LU has a new impeller and gasket you can just swap out.

Yup ob, that's the one I was thinking about, but didn't articulate well. I was thinking there was a gasket, but it's been a couple years sine I took one apart.

Joe, that is good info I didn't know as well and will implement.

Thanks.
