Water pump housing removal for 1969 Merc 500...

I have a 1969 Mercury 500, serial #2629264. I can't get the lower housing of the water pump out of the lower unit. What is the trick getting it out? I have done it before but can't remember how to remove it. The vent plug has been removed.

The vent screw won't help. Did you take out the flush port screw?

The black plastic plug on the left side? Yes.

Then gently pry on the bottom pump base. There isn't much get a grip on, but I pried at the gasket joint on the front and back, then leveraged the base up.

Some pump bases have a threaded hole for 10-24 screw to thread in and break the gasket joint.
