Water pump impeller question

When installing a new water pump impeller (10 hp Johnson) Should a small amount of grease be placed under the impeller to keep the bronse impeller bushing from wearing on the stainless plate below it? Or once the impeller is flooded with water will this give it enough lubrication. Upon changing impellers I noticed the bronse bushing had left some groves in the stainless. Not to serious but just a wear pattern is all.

Re: Water pump impeller question

no lubrication is needed,you can put a lite film around the stainless housing for initial start up and ease of installation,once running in water,that lube will wash away quick,grease the bolts for next time

I put Plumbers Valve lubricant (silicone) all over a new impeller. Stuffs slicker than dog snot, water proof. Any 100% silicone spray lube will work too, I NEVER put a pump back with out some initial lube. Even Vaseline will work My pumps last years.

Well, at the moment I had my 2 1/2 Y/O Golden Retriever barking in my ear, tossing a golf ball at me, laying a slobbed up bone on me, trying to see how fast she could get my arm in her mouth trying to push her away, and ended up with a bunch of white slobber on my sweat sleeve. Kinda looked like dog snot, slippery like dog eye boggers, greasy like fresh bacon, I don't know. . . sounded good at the moment! :}

Thanks guys, I had gone ahead before posting and used some plumbers grease. I was just curious if anyone else thought there might be a need for a little extra lub there.....
