Would installing the water pump impeller in the wrong direction make a clanking sound when the drive is running?

What model?.....
I have to say no rattle would occur, & you can't put the impeller in a pre alpha drive in backwards.....
The only possibility would be if thepin that locks the impeller on was installed improperly, but you would overheat in that situation.....
Is it possible you have a loose exhaust shutter?....
If you pull the drive, provide water flow & start the engine, you should be able to isolate the noise to the drive or not.....;)

Re: Water pump impeller wrong direction

Thank you so much for you help. I agree with you, I don't think it is the impeller but someone suggested it to me.

Unfortunately I don't know the exact model. I just bought the boat/motor on Monday and the serial number is unreadable. The guy I bought it from didn't know either. All I know is that it is a Mercruiser with a 140Hp 3.0L 4cyl Chevy.

The drive ran much better on Monday when the guy I bought it from fired everything up. There was a low whine, but people said the drive probably needed oil. I replaced the oil, and water pump on Wednesday, and now it clanks/knocks like crazy, but no whine. It almost sounds like it is not quite in gear. It is just strange how it sounded much better before I changed the oil and pump.

I would like to pull the lower unit off and run it, but how do you supply water with the pump off?
