Hi.
Ive been given a merc 1000 /100hp 6cyl which i believe is a 1964 model (sn 166943)
I was given it because the guy had been trying for over a year to get it going and couldn't and said he thinks its a wiring issue,
Well 2 days later i get it going, turns out the wiring from the control box to motor was corroded all the way through.
Is there a place i can buy the plug from that plugs to the motor so i can wire up my own as they sell tinned cable here.

But this question is about the water flow.
I started it and it ran ok with the hose on, water came out the prop and out the vent at a splutter at the front.
I did see a small hold from the exhaust vblock that comes out the cowling and figured this is the water jet (thats on most engines to show pump is working)
This wasn't producing any water at all so i put the leg in a big container of water to see if it worked and it still didnt.
Does anyone know if that is supposed to be a water jet there or if what ive said about where the water comes out from is ok?

also how do i remove the gearbox as i might just replace the impellor anyway.

Thanks all

Post some photos.......take several from all angles. This aids in diagnosis. Did you get a manual with that? There are some for sale on ebay.

Ok i have attached a photo.,
Basically the water comes out the exhaust in the prop as normal, then after a few mins running the water spits out the bottom pink arrow.

Where the top pink arrow is you cant actually see it due to my useless phone, but there is a brass looking tube about 3mm diameter with about 1.5mm hole in it, this looks like it goes direct into the exhaust cover, my question is should this be squirting water, personally i dont think its big enough for water to squirt from but i could be wrong.
I would like to take the boat out for its first trial run in 3 days time so now need to make sure i have good water flow and it wont seize on first trip.

Thanks
Stuart

The pee stream usually comes out the side, as seen in this posting (your manual should confirm):

http://forums.iboats.com/mercury-mariner-outboards/1969-mercury-7-5-wheres-my-pee-hole-369942.html

To change the impeller, put it in forward gear, then you need to unbolt and remove the lower unit of the engine, and remove the impeller housing on the lower unit. There are several videos on youtube that show you how to do this. Never run your engine for more that 15 seconds without water running through it which cools the engine. If there is no pee stream, this is an indication of poor water flow and usually means a new impeller is needed. Your warning horn should sound if an overheat situation occurs.

Does your engine have a thermostat?
