Wondering if their is a way to tell by which way the flywheel turns, which way to install the water pump, or do all flywheels turn the same direction. Do counter rotation motors install the water pump in the opposite direction? I have a 1990 V-200 Mercury, I installed a water pump so that it spins clockwise, and im wondering if that is correct.

You could bump the starter for a sec using a jump wire on the solenoid and watch the flywheel, however...........

The impeller sits offset in it's housing such that as it rotates there's about 30 or 40 degrees of it's rotation the rubber vanes are able to float free and straighten out. Once they straighten out, they'll fold themselves into the proper orientation they need to be once they come back into contact with the housing............It takes one (1) full rotation to orient themselves. I use white grease to slickly them up nicely and push them in not caring, they'll find their own way when ya fire it up (with water).

The motors themselves turn clockwise. The Counter rotation motors do it in the lower unit essentially you have one motor in reverse and one in forward. That's why you have left and right hand props. I don't subscribe to the theory of impellers straightening themselves out as I have seen enough of them with jammed up blades to know just put them in right the first time.

I just went by the Merc manual to which the only time its says to pay attention to orientation is when re-installing/re-using (which they don't recommend firstly) your previously ran impeller and not to reverse it's original running direction...Wondering FS if perhaps the jammed impellers were re-used previously ran and reversed? I haven't installed 100's but, the handful of new impellers I have installed over the years, I never had an issue.

If ya watch the impeller and turning the drive shaft before you put the cap on, they do straightened and fold into proper alignment...Maybe just lucky so far.
