So I filled a tub with water and put it under the motor stand so I could run it for a minute and drain the carb for the winter. I didn't see any water coming out of the hole on the leg and by the time the carb was empty the motor seemed hot. It ran fine the last time I took it out. How high above the foot does the water have to be? I had it up to just below the hole. Now I can't seem to find the pump kit on any of the sites. Most start at 1968. Thanks, and Happy New Year!

If by just below the hole, you mean the exhaust relief hole, and no water was coming out, it wasn't pumping. Just an impeller is part number 434424 (18-3001 here at iboats). If you want a complete water pump kit, the original is obsolete and you have to update it to 763758 (no iboats one). You will find the update to be very different than the original, so don't be alarmed, it is a better pump.

The water should be over the cavitiation plate, at least, and avoid putting the motor in gear while running. Check here at Iboats for the impeller kit. Good prices and quick delivery to!

Same parts listed for 5.5 hp and 6 hp in the Sierra catalog from 1954 to 1978

Impeller Sierra 18-3001
Impeller plate Sierra 18-3102
Kit ( both those parts ) Sierra 18-3202

Water should be well over the anti-ventilation plate. Almost to the joint at the top of the gearcase assembly to ensure water pump is submerged

As a safe rule the water should be several inches above the joint of the exhaust housing and the lower unit. This will ensure that the water pump is below the water level as it does not suck the water up very well. It needs to be below the water to pump it up.
