water pump leaking at base.

Installed new pump. Decided to pour water into pump into plastic pipe on pump. The water seeped thru gasket on the base of pump. New gasket there. Is this a problem? Installed and no water pumping to engine. key was installed for impeller.. Goes into rev and drive also...????

Without knowing what you have, can say most sterndrive water pumps are vented so they will prime when submerged. They have a hole.
