water pump merc. 1150

I just started working on this motor, I have it sitting in a 55 gallon drun of water. I took all plugs out and cranked it over several times and the water pump does not seem to be working. how fast should it start picking up water.The water pick up holes are submerged under water about a foot or better. Thanks, John

once motor is running, it takes about 20 - 30 seconds before you see pee. it has too fill that giant powerhead with water before it pees. thats one big powerhead.
