HELP IN THE MIDDLE OF REPLACING WATER PUMP 1990 70hp evinrude need to no wher o ring goes on drive shaft . no o ring on shaft when removed. Kit states o ring must be placed on shaft
i read the other threds on water pumps think i found what i was looking for. No grove on top of shaft and no o ring in original pump so i will not install o ring see what hapens thanks
the oring goes on the top of the drive shaft where it connects to the power head. If you did not have the oring there before I would crack the heads and see if the is any water damage inside the cylinders. That little oring is what keeps water from entering the combustion portion of your motor.

Complete nonsense! The O ring only keeps water out of the spline recess in the crankshaft. Your motor apparently doesn't use an O ring, but make sure to use plenty of waterproof grease on the splines when re-assembling, BUT not on the top end of the driveshaft.
Sure you don't have a groove in the driveshaft just below the splines? It is so much of a convention with OMC, plus, both the groove and the o-ring show in the gearcase diagram.
