I'm trying to replace the water pump on 1988 30hp Johnson. I disconnected the shift rod through the water inlets on the sides of the lower unit, and dropped the gearcase. My problem is that I dont know how to free up the shift rod from up in the exhaust housing. I cant get the lower unit to come off completely. How do I get the shift rod free so I can get it out of the waterpump cover? I tried the manual but couldnt find any information. Maybe the answer is so simple they didnt bother including it. Im a newbie. Any ideas?
Thanks!

hello
you have chosen probablly the hardest motor to change the pump on for the first time.
on the exhaust housing side of the shift rod lift the nut that you dissconected up and carefully remove the black plastic "dang-it" clip. carefully note the orietation of the taper before removal to aid in installation. then you can remove the nut from the rod and slide the case off. when reinstalling remember the nut and clip must go on before the case is drawn up as well as the water tube must fit in the grommet on the pump as well as the splines on the drive must engage the splines in the crank. its easy once you have done it 20 years. the first one I ever did was a beast :)
good luck and keep posting
