Water pump problem?? Please help..

I have a Johnson 9.9 [1989]. When the unit is in idle there is a steady stream of water coming out of the "pee" hole. However, when I run at high speed the water comes out only intermittently. There is a puff of steam, then a very short stream of water which is repeated over and over again. Can you tell me if it is the water pump or thermostat? Or, how can I determine which one it is?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated by me....

Yoo have most likely overheated and blown a cylinder head gasket. The sooner that you replace the gasket the less damage will be done. You may also have lost your exhaust cover gasket, which is not uncommon on the 9.9 and 15. If you want to check the compression first, it will not hurt.
