Water Pump Q?

Hi all.
I was helping a friend of mine change his waterpump (outdrive) of his boat (95 Alpha +).
I suggested he purchase the complete kit but he opted for a rebuild kit. Anyway, he has it pretty much back together (still has not attached the upper to the lower) because there seems to be a slight problem. We installed the impeller/gaskets etc, but the little rubber "slinger" I guess is what it's called (fit's over the shaft and slides down onto the top of the pump). It doesn't seem to fit right for some reason, at least to me it doesn't. it doesn't seem to slide all the ay down and fit into the top of the pump as it should.
I changed mine a few weeks ago and I don't recall this being an issue. Exactly what is this rubbers purpose (besides keeping water from escaping and causing major bux)? Is this all it does, just curious about this one.

Re: Water Pump Q?

IT doesn't fit into the housing. There should be a plastic seal installer that pushes it down onto the TOP of the pump housing just the right amount. Not too tight or too loose.
It slows down the air intake of the pump, not so much water escaping. When on plane, the pump is out of the water and has to suck the water up from the water pickups.

EDIT: This is in the OEM Service manual.
What's in your wallet? :D

The plastic setting tool was not in the kit. We just looked. In your "A" diagram (the one at the top), that small lip below the arrow, that part fit's in the top of the pump opening? Crap, if not, I'll have to take mine apart, cause that's the way mine was put back together. I looked at mine before I removed it, and that's the way it was on there originally.

No, it doesn't fit in the housing. It just sits lightly on top of the housing.
Did you have a Mercruiser kit? They have always had the install tool in them. Don't know what to tell you if it's an aftermarket kit.

No, His kit was a Serria. Mine was a also a Serria but was the complete kit....So it just slides right down on the pump and does NOT go in the housing in any kind of way. Well, heck.
My drive is still off the boat in my boyfriends dad's shop. I was just keeping it there so it wouldn't get 'jacked'.
I'm going to split it back open and fix it right.
Do I really need that setting tool, or can I just use my fingers or a washer to push it down? Seems to me, with it just sitting there, the thing would work it's way back up the shaft at higher RPM's.
Oh well, I'm going to fix it right, still a couple months before I'll be using the boat. Thankyou very much Don!

Blackrain, the setting tool is hollow inside and has a preset height inside. It sets the seal at just the right pressure against the pump body. Too much pressure and the seal will wear out real quick, too little pressure and the pump is sucking air.

Ok, I grabbed one of those tools out of my tool box today and took a picture of it so you can see what it actually is. I also measured it so you can see how it sets the seal on the pump housing while pulling up on the shaft.

Ohhhh, I see now. I went ahead an opened the drive back up and I did have the seal 'slinger' in there wrong. Appeared not to be damaged. So, this thing just goes on top of the pump and spins with the shaft as it turns. I slid it back on the right way, hadn't assembled it yet. Wonder where I can get this little tool thing at? There's a marine place about 30 miles away, would they sell me one of these, you think?

PS. Thanks for the pix Don, didn't mean for you to trouble yourself.

Merc doesn't actually sell the thing, it comes in a kit with the seal. Either the drive seal kit or the pump kit. (Not exactly sure) but if you check with your dealer, they may be able to come up with one (By asking the mechanics if they have one). Like I said, I took mine out of the tool box, probably have a dozen, and usually throw them away.

Okay, I'll run by there this week and ask one of their guys. Not putting it back together until I know it's right. Thanks again for the pix and your help! ;)

Re: Water Pump Q?

Don S, I just bought a complete kit for my Alpha 1 gen 2. The kit comes with the stainless steel housing and the plastic seal installer. Bought the kit off of Ebay.

I'm assuming this only applies to Generation II's? I've never seen this regarding Gen I's, or am I wrong?

You assumed correctly.
