I just finished my first attempt at replacing the water pump/impeller on my 1980 9.9 Johnson. It seems to run fine and good stream out the pee hole. My question is, there are a couple rubber tube pieces (grommets?) and a metal washer w rubber on inside that looks like it would fit on shaft. I didn't know where these go and it is running fine. Are these extra grommets for different year engines or choices? Also, the condition of the pump and impeller was good and I almost thought twice about changing.

One of those should fit on a little groove at the top of your drive shaft. If you didn't put it in . . . guess what?

That little o-ring keeps water out of the splined fitting between the drive shaft and the crank shaft. If it's not there your drive shaft may just rust right into the crank fitting. Fun times.

While we are on the subject, I have been meaning to ask about this. My '59 18HP has a similar groove at both the top and bottom of the driveshaft. I put the O-ring at the top, but it doesn't look like there is anywhere for an o-ring to contact at the bottom of the shaft. Does one go there? I don't see on in my parts catalog.
