installing new water pump assy on 1987 15hp evinrude, never installed one before.....
have done some studying online. I'm a little confused about shifting linkage when I reinstall
gear case to lower unit.
I know I put into forward in tear down but do I leave in that position upon reassembly?
Any other advice on water pump replacement would be welcomed....
thanks

Re: water pump replace.....

I always start with it in neutral, it normally keeps the linkage centered in the acess panel. Then upon reassembly I line up the linkage(after aligning the drive shaft and exhust tubes), after I get the linkage lined up I hold the bottom linkage with a pair of pliers then pop it in to reverse to ensure the connection seats fully. Then put the set screw back in, button it all up, then put it in neutral and fire her up in a barrell/muffs, to test the new impeller. I prefer to use a barrell or large trash can cause with muffs the water is being forced into the water pump.

The "Forward" position simply makes it easier to access the shift rod coupler for disconnect and re-connect. You can go to marineengine.com and look up your motor. Select the "gearcase" tab and it will give you a parts breakdown. Very helpful info.
