Water pump replacement question

I replaced my impeller on my water pump and put the lower end back together and just checked things over before I run test it. I noticed when I spin the prop in forward gear rotation, I get a clicking sound. I put the engine in gear on the throttle lever and the prop still will spin and still makes a clicking sound. Something is not right, I would think when the motor is placed in gear, you should not be able to spin the prop. Just sounds like something is not put together right or aligned up properly. Can anyone help? I believe it did the same thing with the lower end pulled out of the upper power end

Thanks in advance

Re: Water pump replacement question

The manual says when the shifter is placed in forward gear, you should hear a ratcheting sound and feel resistance when trying to turn the prop backwards of which I do. But... When placed in neutral, you should have free spin of prop which I don't. It ratchets like in forward gear. Could the shift block not be aligned properly?

Re: Water pump replacement question

not sure what motor you have, but here's my experience with my 1990 9.9 mercury long shaft. Replaced the water pump and lower unit seals, had the exact same issue, replaced shifter cables, tore apart the shifter controls, etc. A couple of things. Are you shifting with the motor running in a barrel or on muffs? I found with mine, after adjusting and re-adjusting, seemed to shift more closely to completely into neutral while running. That said, I believe I have some part wear somewhere, possibly the shift pivot, a plastic piece, because after consulting clymer and seloc manuals, and adjusting and re-adjusting everything that can be adjusted, when shifting back from reverse to neutral, I have to go a little past the neutral detent, just a wee bit, then back. When I do this, no clicking and prop spins freely. Same if I go from forward to neutral. Are your shift and throttle cables in good repair? I've found with mine, that the shifter cable barrel has to be adjusted fully to the right, if facing starboard side of motor.

Yeah all of my cables are new, like 2 months sold. I am pretty sure I have the shift block mis aligned but no where can I find any info on where to adjust it to when re installing the lower end. You would maybe think that if u rotate it to different positions and spinning the prop at the same time and when it free wheels without ratcheting that would be set properly... Maybe? Guess I will just have to play it out.

Re: Water pump replacement question

Are you using the Merc service manual as the procedure is clearly defined on page 6A-34.

If you don't have the Merc manual, here it is:

http://1manual.com/Mercury manuals/Service Manual PDFs/TwoStroke/830234r3/cover.pdf

You must have Adobe Acrobat reader installed to use this manual. If you scroll down to the lower part of the opening page, you will see the various engine components in red. Click on the one you want and when the first page opens, click on the "Save As" icon at the top LH corner of the page and you can save it to your computer.

Re: Water pump replacement question

Gerry... The service manual is good and all was followed... My question was in the manual on printed page 6a-36 lower unit.... Upper right column ... IMPORTANT: that is the issue I am having... The manual says nothing to my reading about how to align this shift block when the shift operation is not as described... Just says to correct the issue... Well... He'll... I'm trying. I guess I will just drop the lower unit again and rotate the block until I can get free wheel or (neutral) and put it back together while the throttle position is in neutral. The manual says to place it in forward when removing the lower unit but somehow with children... It got changed.

Slayer, You are on the right rack. Rotate the lower shift rod CCW until you find neutral. Set the throttle to neutral and reinstall gearcase.
