I have a Mercury 125hp outboard. Mod#1125422zy Ser#0T509164. I'm replacing the shaft seals (upper and lower seals)under the water pump. Part#'s 43035 and 43036. The seals go back to back in the water pump cover assembly. I thought with the 2 seals back to back that they would be positioned so that one is keeping oil from coming out and one to keep water from going in. When I pulled old seals they were both in there the same way. The flat or closed end of the seal facing up and open end of the seal facing down. When I look in the manual it appears that might be the way it is supposed to be. Am I reading it right? Why two seals then? Thanks for any help.

Re: Water pump seals

My manual clearly shows the seals in back-to-back.... One to stop oil leaving the box, the other to stop water entering....

Manual 90-830234R3, page 6A-31.

Re: Water pump seals

I see it now. Not sure what I was looking at. Both seals were in the same way. Glad i decided to do them.
