Hi Forum,
I have just purchased a 6 hp Johnson Sailmaster in excellent condition. I test ran it in a water bucket, and it did send cooling water out the weep hole, but not a very strong stream. The person I bought the motor from, did not know the repair history of the motor,or how long it has been sitting, so I have no way of telling when the last time the waterpump was serviced. My thought is to replace it, knowing the damage an overheating incident can cause. This leads me to my next questions. Is this service doable by myself, on this model? I looked at the casing, and it looks like just 3 bolts holding the 5" spacer to exhaust housing, but not sure what holds the lower unit to the spacer, so I can remove it to access the waterpump. I looked at the schematics, and it was not clear there, either. I have also read that these motors have a nasty habit of driveshaft freezing to crank, resulting in the shaft being torn from the lower unit when seperating it from motor. The motor is a model # J6SLCOB, which I believe puts it as a 1985,made in Belgium,NV. I plan on keeping the motor, long term, and wondered what your thoughts on this are? Any information is appreciated. :decision:
