water pump shaft seal

Just a quick question. 1991 Alpha One Gen II
When installing the shaft seal, does the seal just press down on top of the housing, or does the bottom portion of the seal actually fit into the housing.

Hope that makes sense. The seal has a "V" shape in it. Does the bottom portion of the V actually fit inside around the shaft into the housing, or does it just get pressed onto the top of the housing

It's called a face seal. The oem kits come with the installation tool included in the kit. Aftermarket kits you have to order separate. Now, how much did you save buying aftermarket?

I actually have the installation tool, and referred to that manual, which say "onto the cover", but just wanted to verify that it does just go onto the cover, since it looks like it is meant to go into the cover partially, otherwise I don't see why the "V" is cut into the seal. IF I keep pushing down with the installation tool, it will start to go into the gap between the cover and the shaft, but wasn't sure whether it was supposed to, so I thougth I'd see if someone could verify for me.

Not trying to cheap out or anything, just trying to verify a spot that I was a little confused on, before I put it together incorrectly.

If I read the manual literally, it just stays on top, but again, it just doesn't look to me like that is the way it should be. But I assume as you say, its a face seal, so it just rides on the face.
