Re: water pump
Don't know your motor but I'll try and give you some pointers.
Do you have muffs, the attachment for a garden hose to your outboard for flushing and testing?
If so remove the cover hook up the muffs turn the hose on and idle the engine. Check the temp of the head near the sprkplugs by touching and if it gets to hot to touch by putting a drop of water on it. if the water boils your engine is overheating. My outbourd has some holes drilled in the leg just above the waterlinefacing aft. If a mixture of exhaust and water spits out there then ther is water. It surprises me a 1986 motor doens't have a pee hole. look for a thin hose going from the block or head to the casing. hope someone who knows more can help you. Also try to find an online users manual for your engine.
Good luck!
