can anyone help, I can't get the shift linkage disconected to remove the lower end. so I can replace the water pump. I have a 1984 johnson 235 outboard and the disconnect seems to be located under the engine and carbs right in the center. How do I get to that?

Re: water pump

Remover the throttle & shift cables from the powerhead (makes it much easier). Then look under the bottom carb (from the starboard side) and you'll see a bolt with a screwdriver slot in it. Take that out and you're done. I use a 1/4" drive set to loosen it and mechanical fingers to pull it out and put it back.

Re: water pump

Looking at it from the left side of the motor(port side) You will see a 7/16th bolt that holds the shift rod to the linkage.

I use a 1/4 in drive ratchet with an extension and a swivel adapter with the socket on the end.
It helps to put some electrical tape around the swivel adapter so it does not flop around but will still bend.
You may want to look at it then shift the boat into reverse (if i remember correctly) to make the bolt easier to get to.
Loosen that bolt almost completely out and it should release the shift rod.
Some people take it completely out.
On mine i was able to leave it catching a couple threads so it wasn't such a pain to put back in.

That worked and all is back together, but now the motor does not want to start, I checked the spark and it seems weak. The motor turns over well but will not fire at all, number 6 cylinder does not seem to have any spark at all. Any suggestions?
