I have an Alpha One- Gen 2 outdrive. I remember changing the water pump and being unsure the direction the veins of the impeller should face. I was told when the motor is started they will flip to correct posistion. Also told that never sieze is not a good choice due to electroysis. A mechanic said use grease instead. Your thoughts please. Thank you.

Re: Water pump

I'm not sure on the impeller but as far as never seize DON'T use the automotive one that contains graphite as it will deteriorate aluminum (so I'm told)
Marine grease or I did see a never seize Marine grade http://www.neverseezproducts.com/marine.htm
I haven't used it but I will give it a try. Good luck with the impeller.

Re: Water pump

The vanes on the Gen II pump will NOT flip to the right direction like the older models. Install as in the picture from the service manual below shows.
You can lubricate the impeller with dish liquid. Ever-seize should never be used on an outdrive, the service manual also outlines what lubes/sealers/adheisives should be used and where.
Here is a link to the OEM service manual you can download for free http://www.4shared.com/document/dPQUcyn_/Service_Manual_14.html

Thanks for the heads up on not using it on outdrives Don. The question I have is where can you use it? By reading the info on it seems that they say it can be used for...
Suggested applications: Bilge piping, screw shafts, prop shaft bearing housings, winches, cables, and anchor lines, porthole studs, rigging and hoist cables, steel mills, suspension bridges, wind turbines, offshore rigging and other applications that are exposed to harsh salt water and fresh water conditions

There is no place it's needed that I am aware of. There is no call out for anti-seize compound in any Mercruiser service manual that I remember reading. It just seems to be something that DIYer like to use. Maybe they like the advertising, I don't know.

Re: Water pump

Did you buy a impeller kit? Is is a regular thin o-ring? Should be for the lower base assembly.

Re: Water pump

It was in a kit and it looks to be the same size as the one on the black base that goes in first. There was also two extra flat gaskets that I guess are for a diff. application. Thank You.
