I recently purchased a water pump housing kit for my 1975 115hp Merc. It came with the housing, impeller and all of the gaskets and o-rings. My question is: are there seals that goes in the top of the housing to seal around the drive shaft? I always assumed there was and in looking at an old metal housing I have there appears to be but, the new one I received does not have a seal. My Clymers repair manual talks about an upper seal but, I guess that could just be for the old original metal style. I just want to be sure before I put it back together. There is the rubber slinger seal that slides down the shaft and sits against the top of the housing but would that be it as far as any seals? Thanks for any help.

OK, here is a reply I received from an OB mechanic with 30 yrs of experience, and I am paraphrasing. When Mercury went to the plastic water pump housings back in the early 70's they stopped putting the seals in the top of the housing since the impeller does the sealing anyway. The rubber slinger seal is all that is on the top of the housings now. I hope maybe this will help others. Thanks

I have a 1975 850 and it doesn't have a top seal. You are correct!
