Hello gentlemen I'm new here and could really use some advise. I have an 85hp evinrude model# 85393m serial# j03325
and I'm having trouble with the water pump, when i got this motor the lower end was under going a new water pump change, so iv'e put it together and it leaks water around the seam and the hole towards the front off the case where the lower unit bolts up, so I dropped the lower unit down again and applied water to it with the unit out, My question is, is that there is a small hole in the pump housing right below the seal where the main shaft enter's the pump, This hole looks like it is supposed to be there, it is factory machined but theres no seal between the impeller and this hole and it does'nt look like theres a place for a seal. So am I missing some parts. The only thing I can think is that It will leak if your applying pressured water to it instead of it naturaly sucking water. Please help

Re: Water pump

The main thing is the pump pumping plenty of water thru block. Remove thermostat housing, start engine (with water) should have good flow fast idle. The new ones leak water thru this seam.

Re: Water pump

Thanks Clanton
This just seamed kind of odd to me that it would leak everywhere like that. I called a mechanic on it today and he said that it would do that, This hole I'm refuring to is called the engine drain back, It allows the water to drain back out of the engine.

Thanks Todd
