Water Pump

I need to change my water pump as the housing as melted away, I have been looking through my manual and it shows pictures of a woodruf key to drive the pump,but on my drive shaft their is only a square flat been machined out.<br />Evinrude E60ELCIA 1981.<br />tHANKS

Does that flat spot protrude from the shaft or is it ground into the shaft? In other words, will the impeller fit over it so that it is held in place?

Muffdiver ,Your impeller takes a fiber(composit) key that is sort of 1/4 round in shape.It is directional and needs to be installed as such.The impeller bushing will have a corresponding shape.New waterpump kits should come equipped with this key,or just contact your dealer and I'm sure he will have one.
