Water pumping but not much.....

Hi all, have a 74 model 50hp Blue Band and just had a new water pump kit put through it, including a new base. Prior to having the kit etc done there was no water pumping to the top end due to an incorrect base in the water pump, that's another story though. Now the correct base is in i am getting water to the top and she seems to be staying cool but at idle it's probably half the force it should I'd say. When you increase the throttle she spits out as it should.
Anything to worry about there?

The water pressure is always going to be lower at idle speed.As long as you don't have a overheat problem and it pees I would not worry.

It could be a blockage in the tell tale tube. I had a small piece of what looked like clam shell stuck in mine right in the bend at the plastic piece where the water comes out. It looked like it was pumping a small amount at idle but picked up at higher rpms but not what it should have been. Pulled the hose from the motor and the plastic output tip. Found the blockage and removed it. Works graet now.

I unclogged mine with a piece of 14 gauge wire while I had the lower unit off. You can run it all the way from the output back through the pick up tube. I was shocked how much crap came out of there! Bugs love that hole, apparently!

But yeah, even cleaned out, it will just pump a very weak stream. But when you're at WOT, that sucker sprays for all it's worth!

I'm a believer in what these guys all say, if you can rest your hand on the cowl, it a'int too hot.

I had mud wasps make a home in all the tiny orifaces on mine. Enough water, and a little time and the little beasties were evicted. I have a '66 650, and brag on it every chance I get ...... paid only $100.

As i mentioned it doesn't get hot so i think i will just leave it, but i will keep an eye on it. Cheers all.

Don't need skill if you are lucky! LOL. Great buy, wish I could stumble up on one like that!
