Wow,.. previous owner NEVER checked these water separators,.... he changed the filter/separators on the engines but thought these were unimportant. These are located on top of the fuel tank feeding (2) 5.0 Mercs.

Wasn't a filter element in the housing? Or is the pile of rusty looking stuff what's left of the filters?

Not sure,..... I believe the pile of rusty debris is what left of the element

Aluminum tank so I hope not nearly as bad as these steel canisters. I cant see in the tank without removing the float/sending unit, although I can get a 3/8" hose in there and siphon the bottom out.....

That might be a good idea to pull some off the bottom just to see what's in the tank.

So there is another water separator/fuel filter for each motor? Changing those filter might be a good idea.

Ayuh,.... You should properly delete 'em, they're just another problem point, without a Need to be there,....

Another potential plug point, another potential vacuum leak point,....

A single filter should more than enough for the job, even if the tank is so bad, it oughta be replaced,....

Yes I deleted both inline canisters from over the tank,...each engine has its own dedicated Mercruiser filter/separator at the fuel pumps, which Ive been changing on a weekly basis.

You should cut open the filters the next time you change them to see if the fuel system is picking up trash and or water. Weekly filter changes can be expensive.
