Water seperator question

I have a 1999 Johnson 50hp with a 5/16" fuel line. I'd like to install a water seperator and recently purchased one with 1/4" inlet (I bought a 5/16" barb to 1/4"). The kit came with a filter, is there anything I should or shouldn't do with what I just described?

Moved this over to non-repair outboard . . . Let's see if you get some more action over here.

Re: Water seperator question

Most filter heads I?ve ever dealt with are only available with 1/4" ports. I'm running 3/8" fuel line with a 20 gallon per hour flow rate with no problems.

The important part is to make sure you buy a filter with the proper fuel flow rate.

The kit came with a 10 micron filter, should this be alright?

Re: Water seperator question

With a 50HP motor fuel flow through the 10 micron filter should be fine, but you'll probably change cartridge once or twice a year. The flow through the fuel/water separators is a much bigger factor on the big 200+HP motors that require 20+GPH fuel flow, and especially if you're running twin motors. Of course you always want to carry a spare cartridge in your boat just to be safe. I believe the fuel/water separators are the one best preventive maintenance item so far. Good Luck!

Re: Water seperator question

Huntero, with my Yam FT60, I uncrewed and emptied my separator cartridge every 50 hours (fill it with fresh fuel before reinstalling) and changed the cartridge every year (or about 150 hours on average). It was also a 10 micron filter and worked fine. Good luck.
