I have a 40hp 402 mercury with thunderbolt ignition but I am not sure of the year of this motor so if anyone can tell me the year for sure I would be thankful. The Serial is 4040149
(see post: Need help finding year of motor)

I bought a bass buggy pontoon last night from an old man I have worked with for two years. He assured me everything was in good working order. He even told me he used it last week. Anyway I took the boat to the lake today and the thing would not idle at all and when I did get the thing to go down the lake it would not open up. I think I may have made it to 3 or 5 mhp. I drove the boat about 100 yards and turned around, the thing was running so bad. When I got the boat to the bank I took the cover off and water was spraying out the top spark plug. I did a compression test on the top cylinder and got 60 pounds then I did a compression test on the bottom cylinder and got 157 pounds. I also noted the top spark plug was very clean and the bottom plug was black the way most plugs are after a while of use. I am almost sure the water is comming from the cylinder. Can someone give me some Idea of the problem and how much it will run to fix it my self?????????

I can not beleve the old man shaffed me, How could he have not known?

 I am so in the dog house.

Re: Water spraying for the top spark plug.

It is either a 1972 Belgium made or a 1974 US made engine.I am not familiar with this model & Im only guessing. It could be a blown head gasket but I think all mercs have the head cast into the block so the problem is more likely to be a crack in the cylinder.Sorry the news isnt better but if you treat this as a learning curve & remember to try BEFORE YOU BUY next time it wont be a total loss.Tell the guy you bought it off what has happened...he may give you your money back or at least some compensation..You may be able to get a 2nd hand block from somewhere.good luck :)

Bad news RC, always test them on the water befor you buy! Sorry you got shafted. Hope it all works out. That compression test hurts us all!
CU :(

1974

With workmates like him.. who needs enemies..
I would be right onto him..
A bit late now, but it's a bad practice to buy from mates.. If you by private sale from a stranger, you can go back and give 'em heaps, but not someone you are in contact with every day.

Re: Water spraying for the top spark plug.

I'm a newbie but your symptoms sound like mine. I have a 1980 40 hp and I lost most power suddenly. When i checked it out the pee hole was only dribbling and I had water comng out around the top plug. I'm in the processof chnaging the water cover gasket. check out my thread "water cover gasket 40 hp" good luck. I too thought I had fried my engine which I had just bought from my brother in laws father in law some 10 running hours previous. I think it all started with a clogged peehole and the water needing to find a way out.
BUSTERBLUE.

Thanks BUSTERBLUE,
Did you check your compression on cylinder that was leaking? If so was it low?

I bought this book to help me when I pull my motor down. I will try to rebuild it myself. I have a few friends who work on boats so if I get into trouble I can call in backup. ;)

Volume I covers all 1 and 2 cylinder models, 1965 through 1991. Over 528 pages, 1,390 illustrations by SELOC.

Re: Water spraying for the top spark plug.

Most mercs have a water cover gasket which seals around the spark plug holes if it blows it can look as if the water is coming out of the plug.Corrosion of the block can also cause this situation. However you say the plug is clean & the compression is low which to me indicates water ingestion from somewhere.Strip it down & let us know what you find.A leaking water cover gasket will not cause power loss unless it is severe enough to cause overheating.

Re: Water spraying for the top spark plug.

Alls good at home. The man gave me my money back for the motor. I did buy the boat and trailer from him. To top things off I found a motor for the boat for less than the amount of money I got back. Everyone is happy. I was very lucky. I learned a BIG LESSON. Thanks to everyone who posted and helped out.
:)
