I am thinking of installing a water temp gauge as well as a water pressure gauge on my 1999 Johnson 115 J115PLEEM. I am always looking back to heck the tell tale and don't like to put my trust in that overheat alarm. The problem is that OMC placed the tell tale in a place that makes it rather difficult to check without walking aft peering over the side of the engine. I am thinking that the best place to install the water pressure guage is going to be inline with the tell tale. Putting a "T" on the tell tale hose itself. Will this work? I am also going to go to west marine and see what they have as far as temp gauges. I am thinking one of the sending units that has a tab on it with a bolt hole I can hook somewhere on the block will work best. Anyone else have any thought or personal experiencs with installing these types of gauges on an outboard? Anything I need to watchout for or do y'all think it would be best not to mess with a good thing and just leave it alone?

Get yourself a water temperature gage kit (sender and gage) for your model. See a threaded hole at a top cylinder. That’s a hole for the temp gage.

For the water pressure tap look around for a small plug somewhere around the bottom of the block. A water pressure gage kit for your motor will have a fitting to go into the hole, and hose and gage.

For the water pressure gauge T-ing into the tell-tale hose will work fine, the closer to the block you can do it the better.

As far as temperature, your best bet is to put in two senders and gauges, one for each head. You can get a kit which includes the gauge and a sender which mounts on the head. Mounting a sender on the block won't tell you much.

"Tell Tale" should be able to adjust it to shoot water out sideways in order to see it without taking a trip back to the engine ,even with gauges I would still like to see that stream of water . jmt

In the old days folks some folks just installed a new impeller on a regular basis.---------------Since these " tell tales " came out I have still seen some badly overheated motors.-----A new impeller every 3 years is the best thing to do.------In salt water motors need to be flushed after use.

There is nothing like looking at the dash and seeing the head temp and the water pressure. It is something to look at other that the tach and fuel. Once running for a while you will know the temp and press at normal.
