Any pipe thread sealer (except tape) will work, if your new sender is an OEM part, it should have a redish brown sealer already on it.

The sender that I was going to purchase is sierra 18-5897 which is what the application calls for, the old sender is longer and fatter than the replacement, the threads are the same. Can the replacment part be different that the oem part ?

Yes it is the sender for temp, it just has a much smaller end to it compared with the oem part that I took out!
