Thanks to all for their help and suggestions tracking down the source of the intermittent problem in my new old motor.
Although it may not be the source of my intermittent engine shutdown, I pulled the gearcase last night to begin rebuild of the pump. See my post below for more info on that.
The short story is that I found the water tube corroded right where it goes into the pump housing. A piece of corroded water tube was lodged in the housing, blocking water flow, and a small hole in the side of the tube was the cause of the water shooting out between the gearcase- exhaust housing seam.
Can the tube be repaired ? It appears I could use a copper plumbing fitting if I can find one that will fit into the pump housing on one end and over the tube at the other end. I am sure there is a chemical bonding agent I could use such as JB Weld to join the copper together.
I am getting the water pump rebuild kit in the mail today [ Go E-Bay !!] and perhaps the rubber tube will be long enough to slip over the water tube.
ANy suggestions ?? I sure don't want to have to pay the $85/hour guy to pull the pumphead, but I do want the most reliable motor on the Chesapeake Bay.
