I am in the middle of replacing the entire water pump on my 71' Fisherman. When I dropped the lower unit the water tube came with it, is this normal? There seems to be a rubber "grommet" (for lack of better terms) up in the housing. I put the hose up there for now. Also it looks like its gonna be tricky getting the water tube lined up along with the drive shaft while putting all this back together. Any tricks of the trade? BTW I do have the service manual.

Just "restick" the water tube up in the powerhead.

As you replace the lower unit, you'll have enough space to make sure the tube goes into the top of the water pump.

That grommet is a bad spot for trouble. I have seen a few times a motor overheating after a water pump overhaul because the water line shoved the grommet into the impeller housing on re installation, restricting water flow. Ease that water line up smoothly, get someone to help you if you can, and make sure you dont knock it aside or ram it into the housing. A little lube may help, and blow some water or compressed air into the water line while it is off to make sure it is free from debris.

the grommet design on this water pump makes it pretty hard to do that.............BTW all is together now and spittin' water freely! My first outboard repair. Now, white smoke? not alot, but enough to make me wonder. Engine has been sitting for approximatley 6 months w/o running, stored in the upright position on a saw horse. Starts well for a 36 year old motor, runs w/o hiccups. Does it just need the cob webs ran out of it? Only ran it for approx. 5min in a trash can. Gonna put her on the lake tommorrow afternoon.
