1962 mercury outboard (500)50hp4cyl 2stroke . Ijust replaced the impellar & water pump gaskets . my question is there's a copper tube that comes off the waterpump & goes up into the bottom of the power head . ican't physicaly see where this tube connects. there is aplate below the powerhead that wraps around the outside of the center section , but i can't get to anything from there . any idea how i can reconnect the tube , iimagine it is what sends water up into the power head and cools the top end . (my manual doesn't show or evnen say anything about this tube .

Wow..this is not really your lucky day. If you cannot feel around for the hole for the pipe...you will have to remove the powerhead.

TMD

Most of the time the water tube stays in the motor when you pull the LU. with the lower unit out look up inside and yuo will see where it goes. remove the tube from the lower unit and install it in the mid section. you will have to be careful when installing the lower unit to in sure it lines back up with the pump. Hope this helps

I wasn't sure you could pull it out of the pump . didn't want to ruin anything but that seems like it would be easier than pulling the powerhead off . It's acopper tube and it seemed like it was set in the pump pretty good .like i said i didn't want to ruin anything . i'll give it a try ,thanx

Hey Skippy,
I hope the sun is shinning out there. If it is get the wifes mirror and tilt the motor up. Then reflect the sunlight up inside the housing and you will be able to see where the water tube goes.
It is easier than you think. Put a little bit of grease on each end of the water tube so it slides in to the rubber grommet easy and doesn't tear it.
I put the tube on the shank of a no.2 phillips screwdriver so it is easier to push in, hands don't get as dirty either. After all we all know a clean mechanic is a good mechanic.
