My new boat has an 2001 Alpha 1 Gen II drive on it. Today I did a drive fluid change and changed the water pump impellar. In the process of changing the oil, I started the boat on a hose to brind the operating temperature up to normal. While flushing, I noticed that the two vents on the front of the drive were venting (flowing) water out of the lower unit. My previous Alpha did not have these vents. Is this normal, or did I screw up the stab of the water pump tube?

Please help??????

You are absolutely correct. I was pumping water and cooling the engine. I did get water from both sides of the transom and the motor did not overheat. I just cannot imagine why water would vent from the lower unit unless the water tube is leaking??? Why would it???

Thanks Bondo. This is my first 8 cylinder. What is the source of the water and how do these ports work? You have me curious now ....

It's the Earliest exhaust escape path.........
Before it's routed down thru the outdrive......

Bondo,

Here is a twist. When I first turn on the flush water with the muffs. Water starts to dribble out of the vents before the engine is running. Should it do that as well?

Yes, I believe that is what they are. There is one on either side of the lower unit just under the top of the lower unit toward the front of the drive. Here is a picture of the vent. It is circled in red.
