Hello all,
1960 75 HP 'rude/ Johnson hybrid.
I am reassembling my water pump, among other things, in an attempt to reseal my lower end.
The question I have is about the impeller housing cap - Photo attached, and #3 in the attached diagram.

It looked like there was a seal in this cap, the rusted bits of a spring and some torn rubber are all that was left when the cap was removed.

I ordered a new #2 on the diagram, thinking it was that seal. #2 turns out to be a foam ring, included in the picture. When dissembled there was no foam ring on or in the cap. It looks to me like the foam ring might go onto the top of the housing, as there is clearly a groove molded into the cap.

The schematic, parts list and repair manual don't make mention of a seal fitted inside the housing cap, but there clearly was one.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Bill

1960 motors did not have a seal in the cap. 1961-up motors did have one. So someone has retrofitted a '61 to your motor, which is fine, and a good idea. The seal is part number 308073. The foam ring goes on TOP of the cap, stretched over the center projection. Glue it in place on the cap. If you leave it out, the motor won't run with the hood on.

Thanks for your reply,

What is the function of this foam ring?
It doesn't look like it will contact the drive shaft.

Attached is a picture with the ring over the center projection.
Is that how it should go?

Thanks again,
Bill

Re: WaterPump Reassembly 1960 75hp

Without the foam ring, exhaust will blow up through the drive shaft tube and out a vent hole at the top---which is under the hood. Therefor, it fills the hood with exhaust smoke, which is why it won't run right with the hood on.

So, you may ask, why did they put a vent hole in it? Because water leaking from the pump housing would fill the driveshaft tube and damage the powerhead if it were not provided with drain holes and a vent. See, the engineers really DID know what they were doing.

I see!
Good explanation, and the reason makes perfect sense.

From the picture I posted in my previous post, does it look like the ring I put on the cap is in the correct position, or should it be higher up actually on top of the center projection, giving the drive shaft a little squeeze?

Thanks for your insight,
Bill
