I run the average 50-70 hours per year on my 1988 johnson 225. The engine runs mint and has always had good water temperature and pressure.

My finances have been low so I have not changed the waterpump in two or three seasons. I have yet to experience this but my question is will it just stop pumping or will there be another sign first.

Re: Waterpump

chances are a blade will break off and get lodged in the water pipe / pump housing, then the motor will overheat. From what I read, it happens pretty suddenly most of the time. not worth the risk when its a $40 kit and a 1 or 2 hour DIY job.

I would say you have four options, and choose the most affordable:

1) run it. Rebuilt an overheated motor $$$$$
2) don't run it, but whats the fun??
3) fix it now, it's cheap, even if you have to save $10 a month for a few months for parts.
4) pay someone to fix it $$$

here is some pictures from my 70hp replacement:
http://www.lot-o-nothin.com/lotonothin/article.cfm?id=1
