Last year was my first summer with our 2007 Q4. The hull and gelcoat are in great shape and I?m hoping to keep it that way. Do many people out there use wax to shine it up and protect it? If so I?m wondering what is good to use and how often. I?ll have an opportunity soon while the boat is sitting on the trailer before going in the lake.

Thanks!

Moved this to the Boat Topics section, DK. Much more active than the Tahoe forum and waxing a gelcoated boat is the same for any make.

At least once a year you should do a good cleaning of the hull and apply a good hard wax. I use the Collinite cleaner and paste wax http://www.collinite.com/marine-wax/

Additionally if you wipe the hull down after you pull it out of the water it'll keep it shiny a lot longer. I use Eagle One Marine Wax As You Dry for wipedown, which helps keep the water spots off my mostly dark hulled boat and keeps a good layer of wax on the boat.

Waxing is important to keep the suns UV rays in check. But you don't need expensive "marine" wax. Any good auto wax will provide good UV protection and will be less expensive. I do it in the spring for sure and maybe once during the summer if I have a lot of ambition.

I don't think I've seen that marine wax is any more expensive than regular wax. Not sure it matters either, but gel coat isn't automotive paint so I'll stick with the marine stuff.
