Wife called me to the TV the other day. News network was running a video of a fishing boat in distress, could not tell the size as the waves were to big, somewhere in WA. or OR. News said the capt survived by making it to the rocks, others died. Sure has got to be some serious, sudden, weather changes in that neck of the woods. Got to be a better way to make a living. Anyone see that clip? Wife gets upset when there is a bit of salt spray over the bow! BTW, only got to 70 today, had to stay on shore, bummer! FRED

the west coast can be really dangerous.....there is a chain of islands that offer protection from the open ocean.....however.....when the big water comes in......it gets really bad......

huge super ferries capeable of 800 cars regularly have routes suspended because its too rough.....(bc ferries) and this is on an "inside passage"

and btw......sooooo sorry about you not being abel to take your boat out in such horrible condidions.......but remember the old boaters creed......its better to put for port when the weather gets iffy :D

remember.....even at un slightly condidions as 70 make sure you use sunscreen......we wouldnt want you to "peel"

It can get nasty in places like that one, with rouge waves that can come through without warning. Search for bar crossing videos and you'll be shocked at what you see.

And I feel for you on the 70* thing, I just hope your anchor rope doesn't freeze up like ours did last week, it can be very hard to uncoil if it's frozen to the bottom of the boat.

yes its true, it can go from a 6 in chop to 8 footers in 15 minutes. the shallower the water the worse it is

Discovery channel and a couple of others have done shows on the Coast Guard practicing rolls in training on the bars at the Columbia River. Dangerous is an under statement, outright treachous and the inexperienced should not attempt it until the tides are right.

Yea, have seen some of those coast guard training videos. I have done some crazy and downright stupid things in my life and been fortunate that I had a guarding angel looking after me. But there is a limit. Could not get me on one of those GC boats for training. You have to hand it to those guys. Then again, flew the 82nd airborne guys years ago on BRAGG. Young/ invinsible guys jumping out of a plane when all 4 engines were still running, made no sense to me. Boy to be young and immortal again! regards FRED Am going to try to edit, hope this works. Got up to 78 today. Went out to the gulf thru RED FISH PASS. Very light seas, delightful! Understand it snowed in WIS. today.

Its only a little better up here. Got up into the 70s. The wind dropped off around Noon, and the Gulf got nice and smooth. Its hard to go out in these Winter conditions, but somebody has to do it.

When I was living in the PNW it seemed like every year a fishing boat would be heading out to fish and some giant wave would sink/swamp/capsize the boat. Seems as though the captain should have either know about this type of stuff or been aware that it can happen and have the civilians prepared.
