Ways to ID an outboard

Hi All,

Brought home a new to me boat today. It's a 1976 Starcraft Super Sport 18, With what I thought was an 85 Johnson, When I checked out the model number, however, I come up with a 1973 Evinrude 135. I know that putting the 85 johnson hood on the 135 Evinrude is just a matter of swapping them out, so that is probably the deal here. Here is the rub though. The motor mount is cracked all the way through, right above where the ID tag is riveted on. I bought this boat from a widow, who didn't know a lot about it. So I have no idea what may have been done in the past.
My question, finally, is whether there is another way for me to ID this motor, besides the tag?

Thanks
Kimmer

There should be a plug on the head with the model # on it, I've been told.

yep, there should be a quarter sized aluminum plug with the model number on it and the serial number. This plug would be located on the rear half of the powerhead, around the cylinder area.

If memory serves correct, on top of the port side cylinder bank. It might be hidden under the wiring bracket, but possibly it is a bit forward of that (?)
