We bought a 1988 Baja 265 Force with a 454 motor. We sold the 454 and bought a 502. We had the 502 rebuilt and it was bored to a 509; we have a 9..1 compression ratio. The motor has been timed and double checked on the timing. The motor starts good and will idle fine. We have been running 93 octane gas. After about 45 minutes of being out on the water, the motor has a steady miss above 2000 rpms and again, it idles fine. We have already replaced the distributor pick-up; the ignition coil; replaced the spark plug wires twice; changed the spark plugs (when we replaced the first new set, each plug had a brownish tint to it which tells me there isn't a problem with just one cylinder); we put on a new fuel / water separator.
Our local marina indicated that the Ignition module on these boats are either good or they are bad and don't work at all. He said the module isn't a part that usually works part time. We are wondering though if our problem could be the ignition module? Any thoughts?
