Weak Spark?

1986 Evinrude 140

Been chasing what I believed to be a fuel problem for some time. When accelerating the motor would bog and die...unless...I bumped the primer as I accelerated then it would be ok...once at higher RPMs everything was fine.

Removed and cleaned the carbs several times using aerosol carb cleaner and compressed air, installed carb kits, replaced fuel pump, replaced all fuel lines including those going to each carb, checked every place I could for air leaks and replaced the sparkplugs (QL77JC4) Still no improvement.

The last few times out the motor has been acting really funny at idle. It surges really badly and eventually dies (only running on a few cylinders?). Attempting to increase RPMs in neutral with the "warmup lever" (sorry, don't know the official name), has no effect what-so-ever while the surging is going on. Eventually, something happens on its own, the surging stops and it idles fine. Still have the bogging problem though.

Since I've pretty much run out of fuel related items to check. I figured it was time to give my head a shake and check the spark (I know, I know, I should have checked the spark way earlier...but I was sure it was a fuel thing!). Didn't have my spark checker with me at the time (boat is 4 hours from my home), so I'm going to check this weekend....which finally brings me to my questions....

Would the symtoms described above be consistent with a spark problem? If so, are coils the most likely cause of a spark problem? Since there is no marine dealer anywhere near where the boat is, I pretty much have to take any parts I need with me. Thought just in case it was a coil, I might buy one and take it this weekend.

Could a weak spark still get the motor up to max RPM? (Last time out it max'd at about 6100)

Could a weak spark at lower RPM, become strong enough at higher RPM to operate properly?

Could a weak spark (not igniting the fuel in the cylinder), all of a sudden "do the job" if extra fuel was added to the cylinder (ie. by bumping the primer)?

Sorry for being so long winded...wanted to make sure I got all the details included.

Thanks in advance and safe boating!!

Brew

next time this happens try pumping the fuel bulb you may still have a fuel problem

Re: Weak Spark?

Thanks Jim....tried that numerous times, no impact. Also tried running off of a separate 5 gallon gas tank....still no change.

Appreciate the input though!

Cheers.

Re: Weak Spark?

Not sure if this helps but I have a similar problem on my 1983 75HP Evinrude. Sometimes when I bring the trottle up, it starts to stall, by taping the choke it gets up and goes, no more problem. I tried rebuilding the carbs numerous times and had two different mechanics try, one rebuilt them 3X. I replaced the fuel tanks and lines. Checked for vacuum leaks, checked the fuel pump and it still does this ocassionally. Finally I just started to live with it. In my understanding this is a fuel delivery problem because by tapping the choke you are bypassing the carbs and injecting fuel directly into the cylinders. Maybe I am wrong for living with it, but I needed to get out and go fishing.

As for the bad idle, that could definately be caused by one or more cylinders not firing but I don't think that would cause the stalling issue that you mentioned. Of course I am no expert and could be wrong.
