Weak Tilt Motor When Engine Off

The tilt motor on my 1969 120 hp OMC electric shift stern drive works fine when the engine is running. However, under battery power, it can't lift the outdrive and lets it all the way down when lowering (won't stop midway). I've been lifting it quickly just before shutting the engine off, but I'm afraid lifting the unit under power will wear out the gears between upper and lower unit. What am I up against, here?

Yup. Check your battery, cables and connections. Most likely, your battery is so weak, it cant accumulate the power from the alternator.

Get it fixed (new battery) before your alternator dies in the attempt to constantly overload trying to charge the battery.

Battery must have been weak from lack of use. Since I started using the boat regularly this season, I haven't had the problem. Thanks.
